The principal casting for the first public performance of a new musical featuring the hits of Anne Murray has been revealed.
Written by Nova Scotians Geordie Brown and Belinda Hart, Could I Have This Dance? will be presented July 26 at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax in what is billed as a concert performance.
The cast will be led by Ellen Denny, Judy Marshak, Charlotte Moore, Laura Larson, Andrew MacNaughton and David Michael Moote, according to a news release. Five of the actors performed in a workshop reading of the show in Halifax last October.
Denny will play Evie, an aspiring dancer who faces widowhood at a young age. At Neptune Theatre, she played Belle in Beauty and the Beast, and Johanna in Sweeney Todd. Her play Pleasureville will make its world premiere at Neptune in the fall.
Marshak and Moore will play Denny’s mother Kit and Aunt Beatrice, respectively.
Could I Have This Dance? will be Marshak’s Nova Scotia debut. Moore starred in Les Miserables and Gypsy at Neptune.
Larson will play Evie’s friend Anna. She was recently seen in Eastern Front Theatre’s presentation of Bluenose.
MacNaughton, who recently made his U.S. debut in Chicago Shakespeare Theatre’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, will play John, the owner of a lodge in Cape Breton.
