TRURO, N.S. — Robin Whooten is ready to don her ugly Christmas sweater and take part in a fun fitness event.
The Truro Run Tribe is hosting the seventh annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Run on Sunday, Dec. 1, and registration is by donation to the Christmas Index Program.
“So many people from the community come and everybody’s in a really good mood,” said Whooten, who is a member of the Truro Run Tribe. “There’s a relaxed atmosphere, with people of all different ages, and some pretty creative sweaters.”
Lights, bows and bells are sometimes added to sweaters and some people add eye-catching festive hats.
“It’s not necessary to wear a Christmas sweater and people don’t have to run,” said Whooten. “Some people walk, and some bring their dogs. We just encourage people to come and have fun.”
A children’s 1K run/walk will begin at 8:30 a.m., with 5K and 8K run/walks starting at 9 a.m.
Registration can be done in advance through Race Roster at https://raceroster.com/search?q=Ugly%20Christmas%20Sweater%20Run&t=upcoming or at the TAAC Grounds on race day at 8 a.m. The registration fee is a donation, or any amount, to the Colchester Christmas Index program, which provides gifts for children in need and holiday meals for families. Runs begin at the TAAC ground and go up Golf Street, to Willow Street, and along the Cobequid Trail. Once they’ve completed their route, runners gather at the grounds for prize draws, refreshments and socializing.
The event has raised $9,498 over the past six years, with Scotiabank matching funds of $5,360.
About 130 people participated last year.
“It’s really grown the last couple of years, and I think knowing the money is staying in the local area to help those in need has been a big part of it,” said Whooten. “It’s also a lot of fun.”
