TRURO, N.S. — Julie Crouse is hoping people will join her on Sept. 15 to honour Terry Fox and his dream of a cancer-free world.

“One of the reasons I got involved in the Terry Fox Run is personal,” she said. “I have a cousin who was diagnosed with retinal blastoma when she was eight months old. She went through four-and-a-half years of treatment and she’s bling, but she’s here and she’s 20 now. Without funds raised through things like this I don’t know if she would be here.

“I don’t know anyone wo hasn’t been impacted, in some way, by cancer.”

Crouse also joined the run committee because the event is being hosted by the Nova Scotia Community College, where she works, and her seven-year-old daughter wants to be involved.

“She brought information home from school and wanted to watch Terry Fox videos on YouTube. We’ve watched a lot of videos now, and although I’ve known about Terry Fox since I was young, I learned more.”

Her daughter wants to do the course on her bicycle, so Crouse and her husband are going to bike along with her.

People are welcome to run, walk, bike or wheel a 1, 2, 5 or 10 kilometre route.

“There are pledge sheets available online, but you don’t have to raise money to take part,” said Crouse. “People can come just to be part of something really special.

“We’d love to hear from more people in the community who want to get involved in organizing too. It’s hosted at the NSCC but it’s for the entire area and we’d be glad to have more people helping us.”
