TRURO, N.S. — Andrew Morrisey fell in love with Hedwig and the Angry Inch the first time he saw the show, now he’s playing the main role in a Canadian tour.

“When we did the show in Montreal last fall I joked about doing a tour and now it’s happening,” said the actor, who grew up in Truro and is now based in New York. “This is my favourite role I’ve played to date, so this is really exciting.”

The Tony Award winning musical tells the story of Hedwig Robinson, a genderqueer singer who goes from communist East Berlin to a trailer park in Kansas.

“It’s a cabaret of her life,” said Morrisey. “I really like the character, who is so three-dimensional and prickly and so unapologetically themselves.

“This role has pushed me farther than any role to date. It’s a huge departure from the roles local audiences are used to seeing me play.”

The show, which is directed by Margot Bégin, includes humour, heartbreak and music and brings messages of love and redemption.

Noelle Hannibal, of Montreal, will play Yitzhak, Hedwig’s back-up singer and husband.

“This is really made for an intimate audience so performing it in smaller places is idea,” said Morrisey. “The audience is really the third character.”

The tour’s only stop in Nova Scotia is at Menz and Mollyz bar, in Halifax, on July 18 and 20. Tickets can be purchase online at https://bpt.me/4263233
