GLACE BAY, N.S. — Elke Ibrahim, Mary Ann McAdam and other volunteers with the Glace Bay Heritage Society are busy getting things ready for the annual Christmas Bazaar and Tea on Sunday at Old Town Hall.

Taking place from 2-5 p.m., there will be fresh baked goods for sale and a good many items from different Cape Breton artisans and crafters as well as a book signing with author Lesley Crewe.

FESTIVE FACTS

Old Town Hall Christmas Bazaar and Tea

  • When: Sunday, Nov. 24
  • Time: 2-5 p.m.
  • Where: 14 McKeen St., Glace Bay
  • What: Gifts, food, music, new-to-you table
  • Plus: Book signing by Lesley Crewe
  • More information: 902-842-5345

Inside the museum, the antique Christmas display is set up and holiday music is playing, helping add to the festive feeling of the fundraising event which is in its 16th year.

"It takes an amazing group of dedicated people to put together such an event. We have former summer students, who help us set up — carry tables, move artifacts around, set up the new-to-you table, bake table, transform the courtroom into a tea room," said Ibrahim, who is vice-chair of the heritage society.

"Sweet Side of the Moon Bakery donates delicious sweets to us every year. Folks donate items to the new-to-you table. Our volunteer board members all have jobs — and are actively hands-on during that time."

McAdam manages the museum's gift shop. She said as always, they focused on buying local and have many different Cape Breton artisans' goods available for sale.

"I would say that our biggest seller in the shop is our own Glace Bay Town Hall cookbook, which contains some historical notes and pictures plus the recipes submitted by local people. Also, our organic, homemade jams are very, very popular," McAdam said.

"Three of our newest suppliers are Paul Moore with a beautiful array of copper earrings and pendants, Kathy Gouthro with stunning Christmas quilts and table runners and Kathy MacCuish with homemade tartan potholders and tiny stuffed animals for little ones."

One of the reasons the society focuses on Cape Breton first — buy local, is to keep to their mandate.

"Our mandate is to represent the history and traditions of Glace Bay and area and try to reflect this in the products that we sell. We feel that we have a wealth of talented artisans locally and make every effort to support them. No need to go elsewhere."
