TRURO, N.S. — The focus will be on the heroes and villains of the wrestling ring during a presentation at the Colchester Historeum this month.

André Myette, who wrestles as Old School, will include personal stories as he speaks on the history of professional wrestling in the Maritimes.

“I always liked wrestling when I was growing up,” he said. “I used to watch Kurt Angle, who was a gold medalist and then went into professional wrestling.

“I got involved in wrestling when I was 20; 14 years ago. I’d always enjoyed theatre and acting, and it’s very theatrical. It’s a combination of scripted acting, in a sense of knowing where the story needs to go, but you can do what you want to get there.”

Myette also enjoys creating characters. He took part in New Breed Wrestling first as a “bad guy” called The Answer.

“I transitioned into a good guy,” he said. “Old School is more like me. I don’t have to try to get people to boo me now.”

Myette, who was born in Antigonish and lives in Truro, has wrestled at events across Atlantic Canada and enjoys the enthusiasm of fans.

“We have a wide variety of people who enjoy watching wrestling now,” he said. “There are a lot of kids who like it.”

He’s been learning more about the history of wrestling while preparing for his presentation.

“I like the old stuff and it’s interesting to see the changes in wrestling and the things that have stayed the same.”

Myette is also a graphic artist, illustrator, writer, actor and trivia host.

The historeum presentation will take place Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. Admission is $5; free for Colchester Historical Society members.
