Bringing people together to form friendships and foster understanding is the goal of a newly-formed group.

The Cobequid Interfaith Council, comprised of people from several different faiths and beliefs, is holding special events for Interfaith Harmony Week, Feb. 2-9.

“There will be an interfaith expo on Feb. 2 and, whether you’re part of a faith or not, this is for you,” said Rev. Valerie Kingsbury, minister at First United Church and a member of the council. “We want to build community with an understanding of different faiths. There will be people from different faith traditions at the expo and there will be a chance to ask questions.”

During the week, there will be opportunities for people to join with different groups as they celebrate their beliefs.

“There are many different ways, and spiritual paths, people travel but we still have a lot in common,” said Kingsbury. “In society in general, there is a deep yearning for spirituality, whatever form it takes.”

She said the council hopes to raise awareness around the faith traditions that are active in Truro.

“A lot of people don’t realize the diversity we have in our community. We’re inviting folks to come out and meet their neighbours and learn more, and we can tear down preconceived notions that aren’t necessarily true.

“We’re hoping this will continue to grow. For us, this is a beginning.”

Baha’i, Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, Islam, Paganism, and the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) will be represented at the expo, and more may be confirmed before the event.
