Moving day doesn’t go quite as planned, and then things get a little more complicated.

‘Things My Mother Taught Me,’ which is being staged by Hubtown Theatre, tells the story of Olivia and Gabe, who are moving into their first apartment together when all of their parents show up to help.

“Everybody has some experience of moving, whether moving themselves or helping someone, so we thought it would resonate with people,” said Nicola Scales, one of the directors for the show.

The play is written by Katherine DiSavino, who also wrote Nanny’s Naughty Knickers, and a couple of new Hubtown members are involved in the upcoming performances. David Hiscock is playing Gabe and Megan Goodwin is the stage manager.

“There are lots of opportunities for people to be involved, on stage or backstage or as a board member,” said Scales, who has been with Hubtown for more than 20 years. “The person who starred in the last show is handling props this time.

“I started with costumes and it looked like a lot of fun out on stage, so I tried that. It was as much fun as I thought it would be. When you’re on stage and you can tell the audience is enjoying the show it’s exhilarating.”

Brian Yorke, who is co-directing, wasn’t planning to act when he headed out to an audition about 10 years ago.

“I took a friend to an audition and while I was there I filled out a form and got a part,” he said. “The only acting I’d done before was in school, but once I was on stage it was incredible.

“This is also a social outing with people who have a common interest.”

There are about 15 members who take part in performances regularly, and several others who are occasionally part of the show.

“With two directors it’s a lot of fun and we can bounce things off one another,” said Scales. “The group has really good chemistry and we enjoy each other’s company.”

‘Things My Mother Taught Me’ will be staged at the Marigold Cultural Centre Nov. 20, 21, 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $24 and are available at the Marigold and MacQuarrie’s Pharmasave, Esplanade location and through TicketPro.

Auditions will be held in January for the March show; The Wild Women of Winedale.
