TRURO, N.S. — It’s time to start thinking about twinkling lights, Santa hats and Christmas stories.

Parade

The theme for this year’s Downtown Truro Santa Claus Parade is ‘Your Favourite Holiday Story or Movie’ and applications are now available.

Encouraged to choose from traditional holiday favourites such as ‘A Christmas Carol’ and ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’ or newer tales like ‘Shrek the Halls’ and ‘Elf.’

“This year, we decided to switch the parade to 4 p.m. for safety,” said Jennifer Mantin, executive director of the Downtown Truro partnership. “For young children, it’s better to have it during the daytime, and it might be a little warmer than evening.”

The parade will take place Sunday, Nov. 24 and the deadline for registration is Nov. 8. Applications can be found online at https://downtowntruro.ca. Anyone with questions can call the Downtown Truro Partnership at 902-895-9258.

Festival of Lights

The official kick off to the holiday season in Truro will be held in the Civic Square, with lights, music, and treats on Nov. 22.

The Festival of Lights will begin at 7 p.m. It will include a parade of lights with emergency vehicles, performances by the Truro Youth Singers and Truro Concert Band, lighting of the tree and Civic Square, and fireworks. Hot chocolate and cake will be provided by Sobeys and the Bible Hill Kinsmen. The Truro Farmer's Market is joining in the festivities, with an Artisans Festive Market from 4- 8 p.m.

“The vendors taking part are awesome and it’ll be a perfect spot to shop for Christmas gifts,” said Mantin.

Christmas Market

On Nov. 29 a special Christmas Market will run from 4-8 p.m.

Santa at the library

Santa will be stopping by the library several times during the holiday season.

“We’ve partnered with the library to offer photos with Santa and there will be some related programming there,” said Mantin. “It’s a perfect spot for this because it’s so local, and it might bring some new people into the library.”

Wagon rides

Downtown Truro is offering free horse and wagon rides, from 6-9 p.m. every Friday during the holiday season. On Friday, No. 29 pick up and drop off will be in front of the Civic Square entrance on Prince Street. On Dec. 6, 13 and 20 pick up and drop off will be near the Tim Hortons on Inglis Place.
