HILDEN, N.S. — Bryn Rankin may be heading to Florida during her spring break, but she won’t be relaxing on the beach. She’s taking part in a Habitat for Humanity project in Dade City, where she could be doing anything from painting, to roofing, to hauling building materials around a site.
“I went on a Habitat for Humanity trip with my parents in the Dominican Republic in August 2018,” said the 19-year-old Mount Allison University student. “I filled in cracks in walls, with cement, and painted inside and outside. The most strenuous part was moving materials, which included cement, in the hot weather. The people came up and thanked us for our work, which was really nice.”
For this trip, she will be travelling by bus with other Mount Allison students. They will be working on a building site Monday to Friday but will have some time in the evenings for other activities.
She noted that, although people often connect the Habitat efforts with developing areas, houses are also built across North America.
“We do fundraisers throughout the year to help Habitat for Humanity and have personal efforts to help with our costs,” she said. “We’ve had a bottle drive and cookie
dough sale, and my father is making and selling swallow boxes. We’ve had boxes up at home for seven years and often see swallows come and raise their young.”
Bryn’s parents and sister volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in the past, and her parents have become leaders.
“It’s such a good cause,” she added. “It makes a huge difference in people’s lives.”
