TRURO, N.S. — It was almost by accident Danielle Todd discovered country music.

Her father lay bedbound with a broken back, when he switched from classic rock to country, the tunes of Shania Twain and Patsy Cline filling their home.

Now living in Nashville, Todd is returning to her birth country for a radio tour of her new single ‘Back Burner’, including a stop in Truro on Oct. 28.

“It makes me feel like a little rock star,” said Todd, from Guelph.

For her radio tour, Todd will visit local stations across Atlantic Canada, including Truro. She will perform Back Burner in the studio, after which radio stations can decide whether or not to add it to their playlists. If Back Burner is approved, listeners can request the song to be played on air.

Back Burner is already available on YouTube, Spotify and other music platforms, but Todd said the official video will be released on Oct. 16. The song was written with some help from fellow performers Natascha Myers and Curt Gibbs, but has Todd’s essential style.

The song includes classic country rhythms with a pop-rock twist and follows her debut radio single ‘Crazy’.

Back Burner was first released to radio on Sept. 30 and was available on streaming platforms as of Oct. 7.

She is also looking forward to performing Back Burner live.

“It’s now of my favourite things to do,” said Todd. “I’m really excited to perform live and see people’s reactions and hear them after they learn the song, it’s cool to see them sing it back.”

Todd has been pursuing her career in Nashville for the last three-and-a-half years. The city is a hub for emerging country artists and Todd is hardly the only Canadian there.

In fact, she was jamming this week with a band solely made up of Canadians, describing the lack of Americans as “funny.”

“There’s so many opportunities here, whether it’s recording, or writing, or even vocal lessons, working [and] performing,” said Todd. Everything’s a hundred times more in Nashville. There’s a bazillion songwriters to choose from.”

Todd’s musical career is set to grow even bigger, as she is off to Australia in the new year.

Todd will be performing at the Tamworth Country Music Festival on Jan. 17, 18, 20 and 26. The festival is billed as one of the world’s top 10 and is Australia’s biggest.
