Eureka Love to host Dragstravaganza in Truro

TRURO, N.S. — When he was a child digging through his Tickle Trunk, Tim Humphrey had no idea how important costuming would be in his adult life. 
Humphrey performs in drag as Eureka Love, and will be in Truro this month to host Dragstravaganza.
“The first time I performed was hard on my nerves, but now I’m more excited than nervous,” he said. “I learned under Lulu LaRude. I ran the booth for her show and knew her numbers inside out. When she was going to Edmonton someone had to run the show and I thought it would be fun to get into drag and do it. At first, I didn’t think it would be something that appealed to me, but I loved it.”
Humphrey, who lives in Cole Harbour, has now been performing in drag for about 14 years.
“I really like the anonymity of it,” he said. “I try to infuse humour and good, tight lip synching. I’m a pack rat so I have a pretty big collection of outfits.”
Brandt Eisner, of Truro, will be performing in Dragstravaganza as Lickity Splitt. He too, learned from Lulu LaRude, and has now been performing since 2006.
“As a kid, I loved dressing up and being characters and I loved musical theatre,” he said. “It took a bit of convincing to get me to try drag but now I really enjoy it, although my nerves are still a mess before a show.
“When I’m on stage I can be somebody else. The idea is to hit the stage and you go away.”
Although both performers have darker characters for some shows, Dragstravaganza will be upbeat and a variety of styles will be displayed.
“If anyone is looking for a good time, come on out,” said Humphrey. This is going to be a fun show with something for everyone.”
The show takes place Saturday, July 13 at 8 p.m. at the Marigold Cultural Centre.
