HANTSPORT, N.S. - They had to build it a day early to avoid the oncoming storm, but it was still mission accomplished after the community sought to construct their largest igloo yet.

Approximately 15 volunteers build the igloo while dozens of residents make and freeze the bricks.

Paul Morton, one of the main organizers of the Hantsport Winter Carnival, said it’s the best igloo they’ve made, from the shape to the size and the colouring of the blocks.

“It’s the biggest and best igloo we’ve made so far and it went really smooth,” Morton said. “They found this year that most of the blocks that came in were solidly frozen, where other years there have neem some soft ones that had to be picked through.”

Morton put out the call for blocks early on Facebook, and he said the response from the community was fantastic.

Residents used milk cartons, water and some food colouring to give the blocks their rainbow look.

The entranceway to the igloo, which isn’t accessible, will also be lit up at night.

2019 Hantsport Winter Carnival

The Hantsport Winter Carnival goes from Jan. 24 - 27, with various activities throughout including laser tag, basketball tournaments and fireworks.

Morton said the town of Wolfville may build an igloo of their own.

When reached for comment, the mayor of Wolfville, Jeff Cantwell said the town "will not be in the igloo business this year." But added that it is their intention to re-visit the idea next year.

“When people see the igloo now, they know the Winter Carnival is just around the corner,” he said. “It’s something for folks to look forward to.”

“If it wasn’t for the volunteers who build this each year and the people who take the time to freeze the cartons, this would never happen,” he added.
