The Truro Homeless Outreach Society (THOS) is looking for some warm-hearted people to join in the Coldest Night of the Year Walk.
This year’s Truro event will take place Feb. 23 and people can now sign up to walk or to help in another way.
“Every year, this is our biggest fundraiser,” said Joan Keller, board chair for the THOS. “This is what we rely on to fund the shelter and cover a large portion of our operational costs for the year. It helps us pay our bills and employees, and buy the things we need.”
This year’s walk includes 2K, 5K and 10K routes through town. Rest stops will be available on all routes.
Opening ceremonies will be held at the Truro Farmers’ Market, at 5 p.m., with walkers heading out at 5:15 p.m. A warm, light meal will be offered to participants following the walk.
People are encouraged to have fun by holding competitions and walking as part of a group.
The 2017 walk raised $59,870 and had 374 walkers. Numbers were down last year, with 276 walkers raising $41,180.
“We’re aiming at $75,000 this year so we need a lot of support,” said Keller. “We are very appreciative of the phenomenal support we have received from Truro and the surrounding communities. Without it we could not stay open.”
