WENTWORTH, N.S. - A Cumberland County cannabis producer is expected to be the first in the province to become a distributor for the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission’s (NSLC) recreational products.
Breathing Green Solutions of Wentworth, which was also Nova Scotia’s first licensed cannabis producer, announced on Wednesday that it is also the first company in the province to receive its Health Canada sales licence for recreational distribution.
“After five years of perfecting Breathing Green’s premiere strains, we’re excited to bring locally handcrafted cannabis to market,” company Operations manager and partner Joe Sanford said, in a news release. “Nova Scotians love local - local food, local craft beer, and local wine - and now they’ll be able to able to enjoy local cannabis products, too.
Sandford said the company is passionate about bringing jobs to rural Nova Scotia and creating a more vibrant economy and “we believe cannabis legalization and production in Nova Scotia can contribute to that.”
Cannabis legalization became official in Canada on Oct. 17.
Founded in 2013, Breathing Green has gone through seven harvests at its Wentworth Valley cannabis production plant and has completed its inspection and crop testing process with Health Canada officials.
With its Health Canada sales licence now in hand, however, Sandford said distribution for Breathing Green’s products is being confirmed, with specific plans to be announced in coming weeks.
“This is just the beginning,” he said. “We encourage Nova Scotians to stay tuned for more exciting developments from Breathing Green as this process continues.
NSLC spokeswoman Bev Ware said the corporation does expect to carry Breathing Green’s products although the timeline for when that will begin has not been determined.
“We are excited about the prospect of being able to offer local products,” she said. “Nova Scotians strongly support local beverage alcohol products and we expect cannabis to be no different.”
The NSLC is currently receiving its supplies from 14 Canadian cannabis vendors - including two from New Brunswick - and one cannabis accessory vendor.
