EASTERN PASSAGE, N.S. — Autoport Limited workers in Eastern Passage are facing a layoff Tuesday if the CN Rail strike continues into next week.

Employees at the vehicle processing and transshipment facilities were notified of the tentative layoff when Teamsters Canada Rail Conference went on strike Tuesday.

"... We will be tentatively placing the entirety of the operations, service and rail departments to the on call pool on Nov. 26," the notice, obtained by The Chronicle Herald, said.

"Should any work be made available, shifts will be assigned in seniority and by qualifications."

Workers were asked to call in daily for shift assignments by 3 p.m.

Eastern Passage's Autoport, owned by CN, handles nearly 185,000 vehicles per year.

More than 3,000 conductors, trainspersons and yard workers took to the picket line, halting freight trains across the country, after both parties failed to resolve contract issues.
