TRURO, N.S. –  A local cannabis producer has received its long-awaited approval to begin marketing its products.

A news release from the Truro Cannabis Co., said it has received its sales and processing licenses from Health Canada.

“This is a major step forward in our evolution towards being a world-class cannabis company, said CEO Brent MacNeil.

“With our licensing in place, we can begin to serve the local medical and recreational markets and directly fulfill our export opportunities,” MacNeil said.

The company, located in the Truro Business Park, was founded in 2014 and has “patiently worked to meet Health Canada’s requirements since that time.”

Truro Cannabis received its cultivation license in June.

“This progress also represents a major opportunity for the local economy, as we will need to expand our workforce in the coming months to satisfy demand in all aspects of our operations,” company chairman Dr. John Gillis added.

In addition to producing cannabis at the Truro facility, the company is also involved with hemp production and processing, as well as cannabis packaging and rolling equipment.

Gillis said the combined impact of the three licenses “creates a great opportunity” for both short- and long-term growth.

The company said it may still be several months before it has a full range of products available for medical patients and retailers but its “immediate focus” is to rely on the experience of its team to create high quality, sustainable production so patients do not run out of their medicine.
