TRURO, N.S. – Don’t count the Mi’kmaq Warriors out just yet.

The Warriors picked up a huge win on Sunday – a thrilling 15-14 victory over the New Brunswick Mavericks – to stay in playoff contention in the East Coast Junior Lacrosse League.

The local club is just two points behind the Mavericks in the battle for the fourth and final post-season berth.

Sunday’s victory was a good bounce-back game for the Warriors, who dropped the first end of the crucial home-and-home series against the Mavericks 13-8 on Saturday in Moncton.

On Sunday at the stadium, the teams were tied 12-12 at the end of the second. In the dying minutes of the game, with the Warriors clinging to a one-goal lead, the Mavericks were awarded a penalty shot. Warriors goalie Nick MacLean came up big, however, and made the stop to preserve victory.

Bryson Knockwood led the Warriors with six goals and three assists, while rookie Randy Milliea potted four goals and helped set up two others. Zachary Whitford, with two, Jordan Whitford, Mackenzie Maloney and Dennis also scored in the win.

On Saturday in Moncton, Jake Mosher-McGraw scored seven goals to lift the home team to victory. Lewis Jarvie netted a hat trick for the Warriors, while Connor Dennis added a pair, and Connor Sabattis, Keegan Christmas and Jordan Whitford had singles.

The Warriors return to action on Friday when they meet the Halifax Hurricanes for an 8 p.m. start at the East Hants Sportsplex.
