TRURO, N.S. – It was a productive weekend for the U11 Home Hardware Truro Bearcats, as they took three of four decisions, including one against previously unbeaten Sydney Sooners.

Playing at the Stanfields diamond, the Bearcats swept both ends of a double-header against the Diamond Dawgs of Dartmouth Saturday by scores of 14-4 and 16-6. Then Sunday, the locals split with the Sooners, dropping the opener 5-1 but bouncing back to take an 8-3 decision over the visitors, who came in with a 17-0 record.

The Bearcats, whose record is now 17 wins against just two losses, leaving them one game back of Sydney, continue to tune up for play at the Provincial Championships, being hosted by Hants North, Sept. 1-3.

Against the Diamond Dawgs, the entire Bearcats team contributed to the impressive victories. Kyah Lovell took the win on the mound in game one for the Bearcats, with Chris Decoste coming on in relief. In the second outing, Matthew Scullion took the win on the hill, backed up by reliever Eve Taylor.

Sunday’s matchups produced some entertaining ball between the league’s two top teams. Pitcher Malky Murphy took the loss in a 5-1 decision with relief from Hayden Hurley. The Bearcats regrouped though and prevailed in the second game, as Ryan Jollimore posted the win on the mound and Hurley helped out in relief for the 8-3 victory.

This weekend Truro hosts two more double-headers. Saturday the Richmond Cougars are in town for games at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Stanfields diamond.

Sunday, in a pair of exhibition outings, Truro entertains Kentville Wildcats for matchups at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., again at Stanfields.
