ST. STEPEHEN, N.B. – Karter Renouf’s third-period goal lifted the Truro Bearcats to a 3-2 victory over the St. Stephen Aces as they opened their 2018-19 Maritime Junior Hockey League regular season on a winning note.
Renouf’s marker came at 4:55 of the final frame, after the Bearcats had opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period, only to see the Aces counter with two of their own in the second.
Dylan Burton opened the scoring from Carson Lanceleve, and Kyle Sexton fired Truro’s second goal, a powerplay marker, from Luc Arsenault.
Lanceleve also picked up a helper on Renouf’s winner, as did Curtis Heffernan.
The Aces pulled their goalie for the final minute but couldn’t get the equalizer. Leighton Holstein and Noah Holm accounted for the St. Stephen goals.
Truro’s Myles Hektor stopped 24 of 26 St. Stephen shots to earn the win between the pipes. His teammates mustered 21 shots at the other end.
The Bearcats host their home opener this coming Saturday at the Rath-Eastlink Community Centre when they entertain the Valley Wildcats in a 7 p.m. matchup. Then on Wednesday, Sept. 26 the Amherst Ramblers will be in town for a 7 p.m. contest.
