Cougars badminton squads earn spots in regionals


TRURO – The Cobequid Cougars hosted the district championships for badminton last week, with smashing results for the orange and blue.

 

In the senior division, the Cougars team of David Morrison, Sophie Nicholson, Nathan Smith, Guus Hertogh, Laura Brenton, Phoebe Bastarache, Patrick Jackson and Federica Varisco claimed the top spot with a 5-0 win over Ecole Acadienne de Truro.

Individually, Nicholson took home first place with a 3-0 record. In mixed boys, Morrison and Jackson went 2-0 for first place. Brenton and Bastarache took home first place in girls’ doubles with a 1-0 record.

In the intermediate division, the Cougars team of Kaveh Masoumi, Harishitaa Prithiviraj, Christian Christie, Byron Wood, Isabelle Choumiline, Erin Gould, Matt Sandeson and Alyssa Dykeman were also district champions. Masoumi placed first in the boys’ singles, while Prithiviraj and Dykeman took top spot in girls’ doubles and Wood and Choumiline were tops in mixed doubles.

Up next, the Cougars will head to the Northumberland Regional Championships on April 10-11 in Antigonish. The provincial finals are slated for April 17-18 in Yarmouth.
