Bearcats fall to Wildcats to close pre-season

TRURO – The Truro Bearcats finished up their pre-season on Saturday night, with a 4-3 loss to the Valley Wildcats.

The loss moves Truro’s pre-season record to 2-2, with the team’s season opener slated for Friday night in Yarmouth.

The Wildcats opened the scoring midway through the first period on Saturday night, with a goal from Nick Bruce. Jimmy Soper knotted the game at 1-1 before the end of the first period, with an assist from Johnny Foley.

Brett Bittner put the Wildcats back in front at 4:21 of the second period, before Brandon Hughes’ shorthanded marker for the Bearcats at 5:26 tied the game again.

Former Bearcats Jean-Marc Evans Renaud put the Wildcats ahead midway through the period before Lukas Kane tacked on another to make it a 4-2 game. Before the second period was out, however, 20-year-old Bearcat Zach Beaton would score on a breakaway, with another assist to Foley.

The Bearcats would pound shots on net in the third period, outplaying the Wildcats, but couldn’t solve goaltender Ryan Huestis.

Luke Melanson turned aside 20 of 24 shots in the Truro net, while Huestis made 17 of 18 saves in the second half of the game for Valley. Cameron Visser made 17 saves on 19 shots to start the game.

Jimmy Soper wore the captain’s ‘C’ for Truro on Saturday, while Denver Lynds, Braydon Blight and Alex Anthony served as alternate captains.
