TRURO - A local boy is finally getting the chance to make good on a 33-year-old promise.
Joe Dunlap, a Cornwall, Ont., resident who spent the first 14 years of his life in Truro, has joined his Canadian Grand Prix Wrestling promotion with Halifax-based Ultimate Championship Wrestling to bring several WWE legends to the Agridome in Bible Hill on May 3.
The show is part of the Ultimate Championship Wrestling Bushwacked Tour, which will see stars such as the Honky Tonk Man, the longest reigning WWE Intercontinental champion, legendary Bushwhackers tag team member Bushwhacker Luke and hard core legend Al Snow meet local stars Chris Cooke, Riddick Stone and The Answer Eric Edwards in several stops around Nova Scotia.
The show fulfills a promise he made to
his grandparents as a four-year-old when
they took him to shows at Colchester Legion Stadium.
"I told them that would be me someday," Dunlap said.
Although they have since passed and won't get the chance to see Dunlap make his dream a reality, about 200 other friends and family will be on hand to see Dunlap's dream come to fruition.
"I still can't believe it's happening," Dunlap said with a smile. "When I got started in this business I always had what I told my grandparents in my mind and now to bring it back home... I just have a tingly feeling."
The Agridome stop will be the second of the tour, which runs May 1 to 9. The event features six matches and the doors open at 7 p.m. with bell time at 7:30. Tickets are $10 in advance and can be purchased at MacQuarries Pharmasave or $12 at the door.
Other stops include Trenton, Kentville, Barrington Passage, Bridgewater, Halifax, North Sydney and Springhill.
Dunlap said the show promises to be entertaining. The co-main event will feature the Honky Tonk Man facing off against Bushwhacker Luke, while the other main event will see Al Snow climb into the ring with Wild Man Gary Williams.
Dunlap said he's happy to have the local wrestlers in the show as well.
"They're local boys and they're good," he said. "If they weren't they wouldn't be on there."
Dunlap said the show is geared
toward family fun. "You won't have to worry about covering the little ones' eyes and ears," he said.
"We want to keep it like that and it's important for the people. It has to be appropriate for the whole family."
But Dunlap said that doesn't mean fans won't see quality wrestling.
"These guys will be going hard and we'll be using top guys," he said.
"The quality of the show will speak
for itself," he added. "It's one of those things where if you go the first time you'll come back, guaranteed."
