No changes planned for striped bass fishing regulations

STEWIACKE - Daily fishing quotas and gear restrictions for striped bass fishing in Stewiacke and Shubenacadie will remain the same.
About 55 people attended a meeting recently with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) concerning such issues. Participants ultimately agreed to keep the striped bass management measures that were adopted in 2008 by the DFO. They will be followed for two more years.
"Based on information from science staff and anecdotal information from anglers, we are comfortable striped bass in Shubenacadie and Stewiacke appears to be healthy," said Greg Stevens, a senior advisor with DFO Canada. "If the need arises, we can adjust it."
The regulations are from May 11 to June 12, 2009, the daily fishing quota for striped bass will be zero fish per day (hook and release only) in the waters of the Grand Lake and the Shubenacadie River downstream to its confluence with the Stewiacke River, and the Stewiacke River downstream from the highway bridge (Pollock Bridge) in Stewiacke East to its confluence with the Shubenacadie River.
In addition, from May 11 to June 12, 2009, only artificial fly, and unbaited lure with a single barbed or barbless hook may be used when angling in the waters of the Shubenacadie River downstream from the CN Railway Bridge at East Milford to its confluence with the Stewiacke River and Stewiacke River downstream from the highway bridge (Pollock Bridge) in Stewiacke East to its confluence with the Shubenacadie River.
