TRURO, N.S. – Truro Lions will look to achieve success on the national stage next month in Brandon, Man.

Six members of the Lions and four coaches will attend the Royal Canadian Legion national youth track and field championships Aug 10 to 12.

Jenna Adams (triple jump), Oliver Arnfast (hurdles), Noah Berniquer (javelin), CJ Grant (throws), Chelsea MacIsaac (throws) and Martha Yiridoe (long jump, triple jump) will represent the Truro club as members of the Nova Scotia/Nunavut team. Local coaches attending the event include Ally Fanning (hurdles), Iain LaPointe (javelin), Dave Galloway (long jump, triple jump) and Nathan Burris (shot-put, discus, hammer).

Local athletes qualified for the national championship during trials in Dartmouth in June.

McIsaac competed in the 2016 national event and is thrilled to be part of this year’s team.

“It has been an amazing experience to go and be a part of a meet with the best young athletes in Canada,” she said.

“Being able to say that you're one of the best athletes your province has to offer is a great honour, and I try to keep that in mind whenever I'm at a Legion meet, no matter how the day goes.”

Grant, who has been involved in Legion athletics for two years, will be attending his third national Legion championship.

“My goal is to make it on to the podium this year and bring home a medal.”

Yiridoe attended last year’s event, while Berniquer, Arnfast and Adams are competing for the first time.
