TRURO, N.S. – People who took part in this year’s Pink Ribbon Hockey Tournament may have been tired, and some of them were a little sore, but they were all thrilled with what they were able to achieve.

The event raised $5,112.43 for We Care About Cancer and the Nova Scotia Breast Cancer Foundation.

“I never expected the tournament to grow like this at all,” said Ellie Shipley-Landry, founder and organizer. “We started in 2014 with six teams and this year we had 26 teams; 10 women’s C teams, seven women’s B and nine co-ed.

“It’s a lot of fun, but some of the players are really competitive.”

Games were played from March 29 to April 1 at the Colchester Legion Stadium and the Rath-Eastlink Community Centre. A large silent auction also helped raise funds.

“When she emailed, it was like ‘Wow!’,” said Raj Makkar, manager of ambulatory care services at the Colchester-East Hants Health Centre and part of We Care About Cancer. “We’ve had so much support from the hockey community. We wouldn’t be able to function without individuals like Ellie.”

Funds help provide cancer patients with things such as gas and grocery cards, and with heating and medication costs when needed.
