TRURO, N.S. – The Jim Smith Electric Truro Midget A Bearcats went undefeated to capture a tournament crown in Antigonish last weekend.

The Bearcats went 2-0-1 in round-robin play to secure first place in their division at the eight-team tournament. After a 5-0 victory over Cumberland in a semifinal, the Bearcats edged the host Bulldogs 2-1 in overtime in the gold-medal game.

Dawson Briggs was the OT hero, as he scored 3:45 into the three-on-three extra session on a setup from Nick Levangie and Dante Coulter.

The gold-medal game was scoreless through two periods. The Bulldogs got on the board five minutes into the third, however, Aidan Rann tied it with six minutes remaining, with assists from Ryan Power and Cameron MacDonald.

Adam Nisar got the win in net for the Bearcats.

In round-robin play, the Bearcats opened with a 4-1 win over Pictou County. Coulter, Power, Rann and Chris Joudrey scored, while Briggs had three assists and Blake Terry added a single helper.

In a 9-2 triumph over the Western Valley Spartans,

Ryan Brule had a goal and two assists for the Bearcats, while Kaleb Johnstone had a pair of goals. Briggs added a goal and an assist and Jack Beselt, Jayden MacKenzie, Jeremy O'Connell, Rann and Levangie also scored.

In their final preliminary game, the Bearcats tied the Glace Bay Miners 3-3. Brady LeBlanc, Rann and Coulter scored, while assists went to Coulter and Briggs, with two each, and Rann.

In the crossover playoff game, goaltender Jason Munro stopped all pucks directed his way for the shutout as the Bearcats punched their ticket to the final.

Jayden MacKenzie had two goals and an assist, while Rann, Coulter and Briggs each added a goal and an assist.
