TRURO, N.S. – Jared McIsaac scored his first goal of the world under-18 men’s hockey championship on Friday.
McIsaac, a Truro native, ripped a slapshot past goaltender Daniel Veremeichik at 12:01 of the first period as Canada rolled to an 8-3 victory over Belarus in Magnitogorsk, Russia.
Canada improves to 2-0 heading into Sunday’s game against Switzerland (TSN, 11:30 a.m.).
It’s McIsaac’s second time representing Canada at the world U18 tournament. The six-foot-one, 195-pound defenceman was a member of last year’s team that lost a quarter-final game to Sweden in Slovakia.
McIsaac, who now lives in Dartmouth, plays for the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
Jack McBain, who played at the World Junior A Challenge in Truro last December for Team Canada East, led the Canadians on Friday with a goal and two assists, while Serron Noel, with two, Mooseheads forward Raphael Lavoie, Alexis Lafreniere, Liam Foundy and Ty Dellandrea had other goals.
Team Canada goaltender Colton Ellis, of River Denys, Inverness County, turned aside 24 shots for the win.
