MacLeod provides spark for Bearcats

TRURO, N.S. – Cameron MacLeod netted two goals, including the winner, as the Truro Bearcats downed the Yarmouth Mariners 5-2 on Thursday in Game 1 of a Maritime Junior Hockey League Eastlink South Division semifinal series.

MacLeod scored at 7:24 of the second period to put Truro ahead 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Yarmouth’s Connor Peveril tied it at 7:03 of the third, before MacLeod scored the winner on a slap-shot with just under five minutes remaining.

MacLeod was named the game’s first star.

Mark O’Shaughnessy, on a power play, Dylan Burton and Zach Moody, into an empty net, had other goals for the Bearcats. Mateo Short had the Mariners other marker.

The Bearcats played the contest without captain Kyle Tibbo, who was assessed a game misconduct for checking from behind just 39 seconds into the game.

Bearcats goaltender Jason Rioux made 21 saves, while his teammates fired 36 shots at Leif Hertz in the Mariners net.

Attendance at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre was 1,225.

Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is Saturday in Yarmouth at 7:30 p.m. Game 3 is Monday in Truro at 7 p.m.
