TRURO, N.S. – The Cobequid Cougars finished third in the four-team Chook Smith Division at the recent 26th annual Birthplace of Hockey high school tournament in Windsor.

Each game was worth five points based on: period tie (1/2 point), period win (one point), game tie (one point), game win (two points).

Dieppe’s Ecole Mathieu Martin finished first in the division with 10.5 points, followed by Millwood (eight), CEC (eight) and Northumberland (one point).

The Cougars opened the tournament with an 8-1 loss to Millwood. Luke Smith had the lone CEC goal.

Cobequid later picked up a thrilling 3-2 victory over Ecole Mathieu Martin.

Ecole Mathieu Martin led 2-0 after two periods, before CEC’s Calum MacLeod scored to make it a 2-1 game with 9:48 left. Aiden Pitcher netted the equalizer with 45 seconds showing on clock, and Cam DeGroot fired the game winner with 15 seconds left.

In a 5-1 CEC win over Northumberland, Rylan McIntyre, Brody Schmitt, Cody MacDonald, MacLeod and Hayden Roy scored CEC goals.

Harrison Trimble, from Moncton, defeated Ecole Mathieu Martin 2-1 in a shootout to win the title.

The Cougars return to action Thursday against the visiting North Nova Gryphons. Puck drop at the Colchester Legion Stadium is 6:30 p.m.
