TRURO, N.S. – Local players helped the Northern Subway Selects capture the Atlantic female midget AAA hockey title over the weekend.

Forward Maddie Quinn, of Bible Hill, Masstown defenceman Lindsey Smith, and goaltender Lily Currie, also of Masstown, are members of the Selects, who downed the Northern Lightning from New Brunswick 7-1 in the Atlantic final in Mount Pearl, NL on Sunday.

The Selects, who hadn’t lost a game since the Sweetheart Tournament in P.E.I. in February, went to work early in St. John’s, posting victories of 7-1 and 9-1 on Day 1 of Atlantics and serving notice to the other four teams.

They would outscore the opposition 35-8 in five games and never really left opponents much room to breathe: by the time Sunday’s championship game against New Brunswick was half over, the Selects led 5-0 and were well on their way to clinching the title.

The Selects will compete at the Esso Cup national tournament April 22 to 28 in Halifax.

Quinn had three assists in the championship game on Sunday and had a goal and four assists in four preliminary games, while Smith had two assists. Smith was named the tournament’s top defenceman.
