There’s plenty to get done with a shorter time to do it. It is, however, a situation the Truro Bearcats don’t mind facing.
Since hoisting the cup in Miramichi last spring, management participated in the MHL annual meetings and the June draft.
Providing exposure of its players is an important MHL objective, and in many ways, a responsibility. The MHL Showcase is an example of that.
Summerside will host the two-day event Oct. 10 and 11. All teams play a pair of games, both counting in standings.
The purpose is to draw attention to MHL players from the university, college and pro ranks. It’s a venture worth taking.
Again this year, the MHL will participate in the Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge in Ontario (Nov/ 13-15). This is added exposure for selected players and coaches with the possibility of being noticed as a candidate for Team East in the World Junior “A” Challenge, this year set for Truro (Dec. 10-16).
Last year, all players 16, 17 and 18 years of age, and new to the league, were required to pay a Registration Fee (1,000.00) to the MHL. This year, all players in those age groups will pay the fee, and next year, the 19 year-olds will be added.
All but two leagues comprising the CJHL are involved in the pay-to-play concept. The MHL uses the funding, in part, to support the showcase and Eastern Canada Cup.
The Bearcats came out of the draft with seven selections, in addition to the two Territorial picks chosen earlier. Building a core through the draft has proven rewarding.
The 2017 Training Camp opens Sunday, Aug. 27. Awaiting that and seeking acquisitions have the coach busy.
