TRURO, N.S. – It was fitting Brandon Hughes scored the overtime winner for the Truro Bearcats on Saturday.
After assisting on Truro’s first four goals of the game, Hughes, an alternate captain, capped his night with a sweet snipe midway through the extra period to give his team a 5-4 win over the South Shore Lumberjacks.
It was the seventh straight victory for the Bearcats, who occupy sole possession of second place in the Maritime Junior Hockey League’s Eastlink South Division.
Hughes, 21, was all over the ice Saturday. He created multiple chances throughout the contest, both off the rush and down low on jam plays around the net. He had two assists at even strength and two others on the power play.
His biggest point of the game came at 2:22 of overtime. With the Bearcats on a power play, Hughes rushed in over the blueline and unleashed a bullet wrist shot from between the circles that beat goaltender Derek Goguen high to the blocker side.
Hughes, from Oakville, Ont., is tied for 12th in league scoring with 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points.
Denver Lynds and Kyle Tibbo each added a goal and an assist for the Bearcats, while Dylan Burton and Nic Blanchard scored other Truro goals.
Blanchard netted the equalizing goal with just 1:21 remaining in the third on a power play, as he snapped a quick one-timer behind Goguen after taking a hard pass from Tibbo. Bearcats goaltender Matt Forslund was on the bench for an extra attacker for a 6-on-4 Truro advantage.
The Bearcats fired 40 shots at Goguen, while Forslund made 16 saves.
Attendance was 917.
The Bearcats play a pair of home games this weekend against division rivals. Friday, Amherst comes to town, while Saturday the league-leading Pictou County Crushers visit. Both games begin at 7 p.m. at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.
