TRURO, N.S. – The Truro Bearcats had a six-game points streak come to an end on Wednesday after a 3-2 loss to the first-place Edmundston Blizzard in the Maritime Junior Hockey League.
The Bearcats entered the game as one of the hottest teams in the league, having collected points in six straight games, posting a 4-0-1-1 record during that span.
After a scoreless first period on Wednesday, Alex MacDonald put Truro on the board 33 seconds into the second with a beautiful breakaway goal. MacDonald deked to the forehand and beat goaltender Myles Hektor with a high shot to the glove side.
Logan Johnston replied for the Blizzard on a power play at 2:05 of the period, firing a low shot past Bearcats goaltender Alec MacDonald from the right face-off dot. Kyle Ward gave the visitors the lead shortly after on a nice individual effort, cutting across the crease and tucking the puck past MacDonald.
The Blizzard made it a two-goal game at 13:37 of the third when Johnston beat MacDonald with a high shot from near the top of the right face-off circle. Campbell Pickard of the Bearcats had his seeing-eye shot get past Hektor at 15:53 to set up an interesting finish.
The Blizzard outshot the Bearcats 31-24. Attendance was 430.
Truro (19-17-1-1) remains in fourth place in the Eastlink South Division, six points ahead of the Pictou County Crushers in the battle for the division’s final playoff spot. Edmundston (29-8-3-0) leads the league.
The game was the second in a six-game home-stand for the Bearcats who host the Crushers tonight at the RECC. On Saturday, the Campbellton Tigers visit. Both games start at 7 p.m.
