TRURO, N.S. – The Truro Bearcats under-18 AAA baseball team will play for a national title.
The Bearcats will represent Nova Scotia at the Canadian championship Aug. 16 to 19 in Fort McMurray, Alta., after winning the seven-team Nova Scotia national elimination tournament in Dartmouth and Sackville.
Truro went undefeated in the elimination tournament and blanked the Kentville Wildcats 4-0 in the final. Connor Angers doubled and drove in a run in the championship game, while Parker Spencer, Mackie Marquis and Zack Betts each delivered a pair of hits and Dawson Briggs and Mats Stone each added singles.
Tyler O'Leary was the winning pitcher, while Chad Russell closed it out.
In Game 1 at Beazley Field, the Bearcats walked off a 6-5 extra-inning victory over the Wildcats, before a 14-0 drubbing of the Halifax Mets to earn a direct berth in a semifinal.
In that semifinal, the Bearcats came up with a clutch 6-4 triumph over the host Hammonds Plains A’s to book their ticket to the championship tilt. Kentville edged the Dartmouth Arrows 3-2 in the other semifinal matchup.
