TRURO - The Truro Giants posted a perfect record to win the Nova Scotia intermediate AA baseball championship on the weekend.
The host team boasted a 5-0 mark and defeated Clark's Harbour 11-3 on Sunday afternoon to capture the provincial crown. Clark's Harbour was also undefeated heading into the final.
"We couldn't have changed anything to make the weekend go better," said player/coach Rob Ollerton.
The Giants jumped to a 5-0 first-inning lead in the final and never looked back. Sandy Smith, Tyler Burns and Chris Robinson each belted two-run home runs in support of
winning pitcher Jason Blois. Shawn Mullins of the Giants was championship game MVP.
Ollerton said the weekend was a success for many reasons, including the fact that everyone on the Truro roster made a contribution.
Ollerton said the victory was especially sweet when compared to the team's effort in Yarmouth last year.
"We were 1-3 so this feels great after the way we went last year."
Smith and Tyler Burns were tournament co-MVPs.
"I'm happy to get the win and (MVP) is an honour; it's nice to bring it home," he said, adding chemistry with fellow teammates made the championship possible.
"The team expected Sandy and I to step up and we came through when the team needed us the most," added Burns.
Truro also defeated Woodside 4-3, Bedford 4-1, Rawdon 11-6 and Cape Breton 13-7.
The Giants will participate in the Atlantic championship in three weeks. It has not been confirmed where Atlantics will be played. Regardless of location, Ollerton expects good things from his Truro team.
"The way we're rolling I absolutely think we can go for gold."
The team expressed its gratitude to its volunteers, sponsors and fans.
