CLARE, N.S. – There were cheers, Acadian flags and lots of great sportsmanship on display at the Nova Scotia Jeux de l’Acadie (Acadian Games) held in the Municipality of Clare over the May 18-20 weekend.
A variety of sports and events saw competition including mini handball, soccer, volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, mountain biking and improvisation.
Following the weekend there are many teams and athletes advancing to this year’s Finale des Jeux de l’Acadie, which will be taking place in Miramichi, NB, from June 27-July 1.
MINI HANDBALL
The team from Ecole Par-en-Bas captured the mini handball championship to advance to the Finale des Jeux. The team had a 22-15 victory over Halifax in the championship game. Par-en-Bas had gone undefeated in seven games, scoring a total of 183 goals with just 39 scored against them. Nine teams competed in mini handball.

BADMINTON
Par-en-Bas will also be sending athletes to the Finale des Jeux from its mixed badminton team. Advancing are Zach D’Arcy and Connor Boudreau in male singles; Marcy d’Eon in female singles; and Jade Robbins and Yanick Cottreau in mixed doubles.
Other badminton players to advance are Josh Frotin and Noah Noman-Pearson of Rive-Sud in male doubles and Louse Aucoin and Lilianne Cormier of Cheticamp.

IMPROVISATION
The other team to advance to Les Finale des Jeux from Par-en-Bas over the May 18-20 weekend was the school’s improve team.
TRACK AND FIELD
Par-en-Bas is also sending a track and field delegation following competitions that were held May 12 in Dartmouth. Advancing from PEB are Celine Cottreau, Jacques Surette, Keaton Muise, Alyre Richardson, Courtney Joudrey and Ethan Saulnier.
There are no Clare athletes who will compete at Les Finale.

SOCCER
In girls soccer Rive-Sud defeated Truro 1-0 in the championship to advance. The Par-en-Bas team did not advance, but was awarded the Jeux banner for most sportsmanlike. The girls Clare team finished in third place, defeating Sackville 5-1 in their final game. There were eight teams in girls soccer. See results here.
In boys soccer Halifax defeated Dartmouth 7-1 in the championship game. In the round robin the Jeux host Clare team had a 4-0 win over PEB and a 5-2 win over Richmond on Day 1 but lost 5-0 to Halifax on Saturday. Par-en-Bas and Clare played each other one final time on Saturday with PEB winning 4-3 to for third place in Les Jeux. The boys soccer competition saw six teams. See results here.
VOLLEYBALL
In girls volleyball Halifax defeated Par-en-Bas in two sets in the championship game to advance to the Jeux Finale. During the weekend Par-en-Bas had wins over Rive-Sud, Richmond, Cheticamp and Clare. The Clare team had wins over Pomquet and Greenwood over the weekend. See results here.
In boys volleyball Halifax defeated Rive-Sud in all three games they played. These were the only two teams in the male volleyball division. See results here.
ULTIMATE FRISBEE
Ultimate Frisbee saw Dartmouth edge out Halifax 9-7 in the championship. Dartmouth had been the dominate team of Les Jeux, winning all five of its games and outscoring their opponents 89-20. Halifax, which had a 3-1 record going into the championship, had rebounded from a 15-6 loss to Dartmouth in the opening game of Les Jeux. Par-en-Bas finished Les Jeux in third place with a 12-8 win over Pomquet. Previously in the tournament Par-en-Bas had three wins and two losses. Five teams competed in Ultimate Frisbee. MOUNTAIN BIKE
The mountain bike event saw no participants from the local region. Advancing past the weekend are Grace Rogers (Darmouth), Zachary Feltman (Halifax), Zephyr Tomlin (Dartmouth) and Issac Williams and JD O’Brian both of Halifax. See results here.
Next year the Nova Scotia games will be held in Truro. In 2020 the provincial games will be hosted by Par-en-Bas.
