BROOKSIDE, N.S. – The CEC boys rugby team have won their last game of the season.

The Cougars beat the Hants East Tigers 20-17 May 16 in Brookside to finish the season in third place with a 1 and 5 record.

The Cougars had tries from Sage McQueen, Tyson Ferguson, Seamus Meagher and Alessio Eritale. Scoring for the Tigers was Dustin Smith who scored two tries and one convert plus Nathan Gates with a try.

The Cougars coach Robert Foley says the young squad has started to click and just in time for playoffs.

“We have four returnees this year and we only had two returnees on the field today - a lot of the young players stepped up today,” he said.

Playoffs start next week with the semi-finals. The Cougars will play Thursday, May 25 against whoever finishes second out of Northumberland Regional High School or the North Nova Education Centre.

The Hants East girls rugby team beat the CEC girls 19-10 May 16 in Brookside following the boys game.

Autumn Eaton and Rachel Murphy scored tries for the Cougars and Madison Hall scored three tries and two converts for the Tigers.

CEC coach Dan Mosely says the girls squad also has a lot of young players.

“I don’t mind this result or how we do in playoffs,” he said. “Almost of a third of these girls started during the season - this is a formation year, we’re building a stronger base for next year.”

The CEC girls have one game left in the season - they host Dr. J.H. Gillis Regional High School tomorrow (Thursday May 18) at 4 p.m. in Brookside.

Their first playoff game has already been decided. They play North Nova in New Glasgow next Tuesday, May 23.

The rugby season was compressed this year because of issues arising from work to rule in Nova Scotia schools but both Cougars teams got in a few extra games at the Summerside Tournament on PEI May 12 and 13.
