Cougars get to semifinal at Big Stick high school hockey tourney

TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars boys hockey team was knocked out in the semifinal of the recent Big Stick Tournament hosted by the Sir John A. MacDonald Flames.

The Cougars were blanked 4-0 by the eventual tournament champion C.P. Allen Cheetahs in the semifinal matchup.

Bradley Gallant scored with less than four minutes remaining to salvage a 1-1 draw with the Lockview Dragons, allowing Cobequid to advance to the semifinal with a 1-0-2 record in the round-robin. Blake Meech manned the crease and was named to the tournament all-star team.

Cobequid nipped the Halifax West Warriors 3-2. Brady Meech scored a pair of goals while Austin Wheeler notched the other. Richard MacNevin recorded a pair of assists with others coming from mat Laing, Brady Davis, Kylar Frank and Ethan Hume. Sebastien Gibson was the winning goaltender.

Wheeler scored the Cougars lone goal in a 1-1 draw with the Moncton Purple Knights to open the event. Quinn Fullerton and Davis claimed helpers and Blake Meech was in the net.
