CHARLOTTETOWN - Details are scarce in the early stages of an investigation into a body that washed up on the rocks Tuesday near the Hillsborough Bridge.

An RCMP officer takes notes as forensic officers look on at the scene where a body has washed up on the rocks near the Hillsborough Bridge.

RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Leanne Butler released a statement about 2 p.m. saying "at approximately 11:00 this morning the Queens RCMP received a call that a body had been found on the shore, beside the Hillsborough Bridge, on the Stratford side.  The body was noticed by someone walking across the bridge.

"The deceased male is 63 years old, from Stratford and had not been reported as a missing person. His name is not being released pending the notification of his next of kin."

The Queens RCMP were assisted by the Forensic Identification Unit, the Major Crime Unit, RCMP Police Dog Services and the Coroners office.

Butler says a person walking across the bridge spotted a body washed up on the rocks at the base of the Stratford approach ramp to the bridge.

“We will try to take any evidence that may be around,’’ says Butler.

“It does take a little bit of time to do the investigation. The coroner will probably attend here. Then after that investigation is done they will remove the remains.’’

Queens County RCMP by a 911 call placed at about 11 a.m.

Traffic heading towards Stratford was moving slowly for a time as many motorists turned their attention to a row of RCMP vehicles pulled over to the shoulder.

Two vehicles were even involved in a minor collision as they passed the police vehicles, coming close to clipping two officers and two reporters.
