TRURO – More than 200 fans gathered at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre on Saturday to wish the Truro Bearcats well in their bid for a second straight Fred Page Cup.

The Bearcats held practice prior to the event and later returned to the ice to sign autographs, pose for pictures and skate with kids.

“I think this is awesome that they’re doing something like this. It’s great,” said Belmont’s Jeff Cameron, a longtime season-ticket holder, who attended the event with his six-year-old son Bobby.

The Bearcats leave Monday for Saint-Jerome, Que., to compete in the Fred Page Cup Eastern Canadian junior A hockey championship.

They enter the four-team tournament as defending champions after winning the 2013 title in Truro.

Debbie Brown, Bearcats events co-ordinator, organized Saturday’s sendoff and was thrilled with the turnout.

“It’s just wonderful for the players to interact with fans just before they head out to Quebec,” said Brown.

“They’re so excited,” she added, of the many young fans who were on the ice. “And these young fans, I can tell you, have been following the Bearcats all season long, so it’s very important they get to congratulate the players and wish them all the best on the way to the Fred Page Cup.”

Bearcats forward Jacob Smith said players enjoy interacting with fans and the community support is appreciated.

“The guys really like it when fans come out and support us at events like this, and especially having time with the little kids and inspiring little Bearcats that want to come out and see what it’s like to skate with us. Definitely the guys enjoyed it and we had a lot of fun skating with them.”
