OTTAWA  - A brand of grilled chicken strips sold in Nova Scotia stores has been recalled because of possible Listeria contamination.

Recalled chicken strips

Freshouse Foods Ltd. is recalling Kirkland Signature brand Grilled Chicken Breast Strips from the marketplace and the company has issued a warning that consumers should not eat the recalled product.

The chicken strips are known to have been sold in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Quebec and possibly other provinces.

The recalled product involves the 2 X 500 g size of grilled chicken strips with a best before date of April 13-26.

Consumers who have the product in their homes should discard them or return them to the store where they were purchased.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness.

Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

Although no reported illnesses have been associated though the consumption of this product, the recall was triggered by Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) test results.

The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. If other high-risk products are recalled the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings.

The CFIA is also verifying that industry is removing the recalled product from the marketplace.
