Tatamagouche student to be honoured for heroic actions

TATAMAGOUCHE – A North Colchester High School student will be honoured on Friday for preforming life-saving first aid.

Garett Nickelo, a teacher at North Colchester High School in Tatamagouche, is grateful that Grade 11 student Maggie Langille knows first aid. Nickelo recently choked on his dinner at the school and Langille came to his rescue by successfully administering the Heimlich maneouvre. File Photo

Maggie Langille will be recognized by the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board and the Red Cross during a ceremony at her school at 12:30 p.m.

During a recent lunch break at school, Langille came to the aid of one of her teachers, Garett Nickelo, who was choking. The Grade 11 student successfully administered the Heimlich Maneuver potentially saving his life.

    It's great that this young woman prepared to help and did not hesitate to do so. Good for you. Those who write the news have lost the meaning of hero. A hero willing risks their own safety of even there life, to aid another living being whose safety or life is at risk. Soldiers in combat, fire fighters pulling people from a burning building, police running towards someone with a gun. Heimlich I don't think qualifies as heroism. But great that she knew how and in fact successfully performed first aid.
