Joanna Burris and Oliver Locke were presented with the Queen Elizabeth II and Governor General’s medals, respectively, during a ceremony on Monday at the Cobequid Educational Centre.
Oliver Locke and Joanna Burris were awarded the 2013 Governor General’s Medal and Queen Elizabeth II Medal respectively.
Both medals had previously been awarded during graduation ceremonies, however a new directive postponed the ceremony until final IB grades were available in August.
The Governor General’s Medal, established in 1873, recognizes the student who has achieved the highest academic average based on their final marks from grades 11 and 12.
The Queen Elizabeth II Medal has three criteria for its recipient: has demonstrated a superior achievement in school studies in all three years of high school; has achieved an outstanding record in all aspects of school and community involvement; and is graduated having satisfied the requirements for a Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma.
