TRURO - There's a new woman behind the helm of the Truro Farmers' Market.

Out of 45 applications for the position of market manager, Jamie Alcorn was the successful candidate.

"I'm very excited for this new position," said Alcorn, who has been the officer manager for Truro-Bible Hill MLA Lenore Zann for the past three years.

"I have a strong passion for community and local agriculture, and supporting the local economy."

The 53-year-old is a native of Tatamagouche who has been living in Truro for the past 21 years. She will start in the new position on Monday.

With the market having moved into the old fire hall on the corner of Prince and Young streets for last year's season, this will be the first full year at the location.

"I'm looking forward to working with the board on developing the market more, expanding our vendors and making sure people have use of the space, even when it's not in use (by the market)," Alcorn said.

Lloyd Mapplebeck, president of the market, will remain acting manager until Alcorn starts.

"She's had a long interest in the market and attending it. When we introduced her to board members at our annual general meeting last week, a lot of the members had recognized her from being there."

With only three weeks until the market opens on April 6 from the time she starts the position, the top tasks Alcorn will be working on is vendor applications (making sure all pertinent information is available), as well as advertising.

"She will be quite busy. Last year we had over 100 vendors (throughout the season) and when we start in April, we will probably be around 20 or 25," said Mapplebeck, adding the market vendor number peaks at around 45.

Alcorn's position will run until December, when it will be reviewed. Prior to Alcorn's hiring, the market had both a project manager and site manager during its transition year to the old fire hall on the corner of Young and Prince streets.

Key responsibilities for Alcorn will include market management, community relations, marketing, vendor recruitment and management, and office management.

I believe Jamie's title is CONSTITUENCY ASSISTANT and she is an integral part of the MLA's office. I can't imagine why her title has been down-played. This shows lack of respect for her. Without Jamie and her knowledge anyone needing assistance in the next few months will not get it.... Many people are questioning why Jamie would leave a good paying unionized job with benefits for a lower paying non benefit job.... Perhaps she is acknowledging that Lenore Zann has no chance in ___ for re-election and the constituents will elect someone who is actually going to have a presence here and do what is best for them?
