Henry Waldemar Dyck, Cd, Rcn

Henry Waldemar Dyck, CD, RCN - 88, died peacefully at Colchester East Hants Health Centre on March 16, 2018. Born at Vineland, Ontario, he was the youngest child of Nicholas and Anna (Hamm) Dyck. He was a proud member of the Canadian Navy for 27 years and attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer First Class. He served on both the east and west coast of Canada, and while he was a member of Sea Training Staff he sailed on most of the Naval ships stationed on the east coast. He was attached to HMCS Portage, Swansee, Athabaskan, Ontario, Huron, Micmac, Saguenay, and Cap de la Madeleine. CPO Dyck’s expertise was in Radio Communications. He was stationed at Naval Radio Station Albro Lake and Naval Radio Station Mill Cove. He was also stationed at Padloping Island, North West Territories as a communicator and weather observer for one year. The sailors at this station provided beacon and weather observation to both civilian and military aircraft. He was Petty Officer in charge of the Naval Communications Facility at Frobisher Bay for six months. This facility provided communications to both naval and merchant ships re supplying the DEW Line in the Canadian Arctic. He was a Chief at Mill Cove Radio Station, the Albro Lake Radio Station, and instructed at CFB Halifax Fleet School. He was Vice President of Chiefs and Petty Officers Mess at CFB Stadacona. He coached minor hockey, minor baseball, and was a Cub instructor. Following his retirement in 1976, he became Head Gardener for the Halifax- Dartmouth Bridge Commission. He was responsible for the design and original planting of the parks at the approaches to the two bridges between Halifax and Dartmouth. He studied landscaping at Nova Scotia Agricultural College which added to his life-long love of gardening. His love of beauty and creation was always evident in his home gardens which he planted and tended with the care of an artist. After moving to Stewiacke East in 1979 he and his friend Lambert Vissers founded Visdyck Garden Supplies and were one of the first landscapers to introduce bark mulch to Nova Scotia. They later founded Visdyck Enterprises and produced Bert’s International Sauce, a gourmet cooking sauce. He was Colchester County Council’s civilian representative on the Planning Committee, the Board of Health and the Board of Appeal. He was awarded the Canadian Armed Forces Decoration and Bar and the Centennial Medal. Chief Dyck, known fondly to his friends as “” Handsome Hank”” had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved talking with family, friends, and neighbors, especially when the subject was nature inspired. He loved the birds and deer, and even had a pet squirrel and raccoons who ventured onto his deck to steal the bird’s food. His social life always centered around his family. He is survived by his wife Hattie: son- Richard, Dartmouth, and grandchildren Roxanna (Danny), Jonathan, and Nicholas (Laura) son- Robert (Pam) Dartmouth, and grandchildren Melanie and Cameron daughter Catherine Andrews (Richard) Ottawa, and grandson Scott Great grandchildren Laura Lee and Christopher Dyck and Arianna and Aden Boyd Stepchildren: Gloria (Terry) Kelly, Winnipeg, granddaughter Lisa (Dave) Pringle, Winnipeg, and great grandchildren, Jordan, Donovan and Naomi Lorna (Kendall) Butler, Saskatoon Bruce (Doreen) Densmore, Windsor Junction, and grandsons Kyle and Ryan Stephen (Laura) Densmore, Virden, Manitoba, granddaughters Hayley and Ashton, great grandson Dawson. Vickie (Dale), McInnis, Aurora, Ontario and grandson Austin Anne (Blaine) Blinkhorn, Dartmouth, grandson Chalmers, and great grandchildren Callum and Delia Gregory (Nicky) Densmore, grandchildren Raegan, Kouper, Carson, Sevour and Darragh Karen MacKenzie (David), Valley, granddaughters Kelsey and Lindsay Grand children Calvin Butler (Jackie) and greatgrandchildren Randi Lynn and Roman sister- Lavina (John) Enns, London, Ontario sister- Betty Martens, Black Rock, British Columbia brother- Nicholas, (Harriet) Toronto He was predeceased by step-daughter Alice (Randall) Butler, Shelburne. His body is resting in Colchester Community Funeral Home, Truro. There will be no visitation. A celebration of his life will be held in Colchester Community Funeral Home, Truro, on Tuesday, March 20th at 2pm. followed by a reception. Family flowers only please.
