A young Halifax man has pleaded guilty to assaulting his ex-girlfriend, killing her family’s dog and injuring their pet bird.
Cameron Robert Dolan, 18, appeared in Halifax provincial court Wednesday by video from jail.
Dolan was arrested after an incident involving his former girlfriend at a residence in the Herring Cove Road area of Halifax on Jan. 15.
After being assaulted, the young woman left the home for a brief period of time. When she returned, it was in disarray and there was blood everywhere.
The dog, a Yorkie-Chihuahua mix named Tucker, was missing and police believed it had been killed. The bird was discovered to have a broken leg.
The family found the dog’s body in the area about a week later.
On Wednesday, Dolan pleaded guilty to charges of assault, property mischief, killing the dog, injuring the bird, breaching bail and probation orders by consuming alcohol, and violating a court order by living on the same premises as an animal.
Dolan will be sentenced next month.
Last June, Dolan was sentenced in Truro provincial court to 90 days in jail, followed by 18 months’ probation, after pleading guilty to maiming a pig by slitting its throat.
The pig, which belonged to Dolan’s grandfather, did not die immediately but had to be euthanized, the court was told.
