The 25-year-old Lower Truro resident recalls playing Monopoly as a teenager and being very determined to succeed, which he believes was an early sign of his interest in business and international entrepreneurship.
“I hated when people quit Monopoly halfway through. I was always the banker and I never cheated,” he recalled. “And I always wanted to open my own bike business.”
Although that didn’t happen, Bagnell did enroll in the Nova Scotia Community College Truro Campus business administration program. And, he is one of seven students in NSCC campuses throughout the province chosen to study for more than a month in the Netherlands this spring.
“I’m very excited. It’s my first time in Europe and there’s going to be a lot of work in a short amount of time but it will provide two credits towards my business course here,” said Bagnell of his May 27 to June 14 experience at Hanze University of Applied Science’s business program.
“I’ll also learn about the culture, diversity and history, and visit businesses, museums, arts and sports events. We will also go to Germany for business visits.”
Bagnell believes the experience will open doors not only for him but perhaps the town.
“I can bring (my experience) back to Truro. It’s good to hear about diverse cultures because more are entering this town. We are an aging population and we need a broader look at opportunities,” he said.
International business also intrigues Bagnell because of its influence worldwide.
“The world is becoming a big global community and the Internet connects us instantly.”
Bagnell will report to the college about his trip and any organization wishing to hear about it can contact him for a presentation. He also hopes the community will help him financially prepare for the experience. The trip will cost about $4,000 and any donations from the community would be helpful.
In addition, Bagnell is hosting a fundraising event at the Split Crow on March 28. The event will run from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m., or close time, and will feature the band Black Rock Road.
A limbo contest and silent auction are being considered for the event as well. The cover charge is $10.
