Luckily, Terrio put his Tim Hortons RRRoll Up the Rim to Win ® contest coffee cup in his lunch bag to throw it away later.
At home in South Maitland, Terrio was ready to put the cup in the trash, but his wife told him to roll up the rim.
“It could be a new car,” she joked at the time.
Turns out it was.
“I was in disbelief,” Terrio said on Thursday as he picked up a brand new, red, 2014 Toyota Corolla from Tim Hortons on Robie Street.
The first person he called when he won seven weeks ago was his brother, Terrio said.
“I told him not to tell anyone.”
Usually not an excitable person, Terrio said receiving the keys to a new car was the most excitement he had felt in a long time as he viewed his prize.
“It’s not everyday you win a new car,” he said.
Franchise owner John MacKenzie said the last time he’d given out a new car through the restaurants RRRoll Up The Rim ® contest was 20 years ago at his Inglis Street location.
“It’s good for the community, “ MacKenzie said. “And it’s great for staff morale to see someone win.”
A second car was given out on Thursday to Shannon Killam of Yarmouth. She picked up her car at the Tim Hortons on Inglis Street.
Another top contest prize was discovered under the rim of a coffee cup purchased from the Pictou Road, Bible Hill, Tim Hortons location.
Saida Faulkner of Truro was watching her daughter play volleyball when she rolled up her rim and discovered she had won a $5,000 Visa card.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said Faulkner.
To confirm, she turned to the people around her, asking them if it was real. Her friend was more excited than she was, jumping and yelling in the gym, Faulkner said.
“She did all the screaming for me.”
With her winnings, Faulkner hopes to take a trip to Morocco, where she’s originally from, to visit family and friends.
“That’s what I’m hoping for at least.”
