Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating an incident in which a Colchester County man was injured during an arrest by the RCMP.
A 24-year-old Kemptown man was injured during the course of his arrest for refusing the breathalyzer early Sunday morning.
An RCMP news release said the man was pulled over shortly after 4:30 a.m.
SIRT director Felix Cacchione said in a separate release an RCMP officer observed a vehicle stopped in an area where suspicious activity had recently occurred. Approaching the vehicle the officer noticed an odour of alcohol coming from the driver.
“Suspecting the driver may be impaired, the officer asked him to provide a breath sample,” Cacchione said.
After several unsuccessful attempts, the man was told he would be arrested for refusal. But he resisted and tried to return to his vehicle.
“It was during the course of his arrest that the suspect suffered an injury to his hand,” Cacchione said.
The man was taken by the RCMP to hospital for an assessment and was treated for his injury.
Criminal charges of refusal of an approved screening device demand and obstruction are pending.
